Our Banner Lower School students are enthusiastically learning all about the country of Spain for this year's "International Day" and we would like to invite lower school parents to join us on this special morning. The annual event will take place on Friday morning, October 13 at 8:30, followed by dismissal at 11:30. Over the past several years, the Banner lower school students have studied about the following countries: Ireland, Japan, Costa Rica, Greece, Nigeria, Israel, Brazil, China, Australia, Mexico, Italy and Korea. To enrich our investigation into the incredible country of Spain, our resource teachers, in partnership with the classroom teachers, have been working diligently on setting up units of study in their subject area.
On the morning of International Day, our resource teachers will have stations set up outdoors, weather permitting. The lower school students will move with their class from station to station and the resource teacher will share an activity in their subject area, giving the students an opportunity to learn more about Spain. Often on International Day, our lower school students enjoy dressing up and can do so in traditional Spanish costumes, or they can wear Banner dress down clothes. The internet or books on Spain are good resources to look through to get ideas on how your child could dress for International Day.
The stations will be set up down the fire lane (paved area between the buildings) and the resource teachers will be teaching the following in their stations:
Art- Students will learn about Picasso and follow up with an art activity.
Students have previously been learning about Salvador Dali in their art classes and completed a project inspired by The Elephants with PreK4-2nd grade and The Persistence of Time with 3rd-5th grade.
Drama- Students will act out some of the adventures from Don Quixote.
Students have been discussing the plot in previous classes.
PE- Students will play a game called “Patata” (similar to Hot Potato)
In previous classes, students have been playing a Spanish game called Arana, which is similar to Sharks and Minnows, but involves more teamwork.
Library- Annette Cupp (former Banner library teacher) will be making a “guest” appearance and reading the book Medio Pollito to our students.
Previously, library teachers have read the story Maria the Matador to the students.
Music- Students will be doing the Flamenco Dance
Students have been working on learning the steps in past music classes.
Spanish- Students will be making an abanico (Spanish fan).
Students have been learning about Spanish fans as well as learning some Spanish phrases.
International Day will conclude with a special grand finale near the stadium seating located behind the playground at about 10:45 a.m. The conclusion will feature Mr. Brad Russell (Pastor to Evan, Corban and Mrs. Van Horn) who will share about his mission trips to Spain and will conclude with prayer for the Spanish people. If it is a rainy day, we will enjoy International Day in the Lower School building. Our hope is that through these fun, educational activities our students will fall in love with different people groups and cultures that God created in this diverse world and they will become passionate about serving and ministering to others! We hope that you will be able to join us!
In Christ,
Kathy Ivill
