Our students, faculty and staff have been rolling up their sleeves to serve their fellow citizens along with spreading the good news of Jesus Christ during the holidays.
Here's a look:
Seniors at Lucy Corr Retirement Center
In mid-October, the senior class spent a fun-filled afternoon at Lucy Corr (lucycorr.org) playing bingo with the residents. Students brought along prizes, adding extra excitement to the games and brightening everyone's day. The visit was a heartwarming experience that fostered connection and community across generations.
Junior Class Service Project: Opening Minds Through Art
The junior class served at the Sitter & Barfoot Veterans Care Center in partnering with the "Opening Minds Through Art" program. Students spent the day connecting with veterans living with dementia. The group helped the individuals they visited express themselves creatively through painting and mixed-media projects.
As part of the process, students guided the veterans in making artistic choices—such as selecting colors, materials and design elements as well as encouraging independence and self-expression. The experience gave the students an opportunity to build meaningful relationships. They honored those who served while witnessing the power of art to bridge generations and open hearts.
10th Graders at Chesterfield Food Bank
The sophomore class recently packed food for the Chesterfield Food Bank for their quarterly service project. With teamwork, laughter and a lot of heart, they filled boxes to help families in need. It was a fun and rewarding way to make a difference together.
Ninth Graders at Moments of Hope
Moments of Hope is an outreach to the homeless in the greater Richmond area. Beginning in late 2014 with just one person, it has grown into a larger nonprofit that now serves Caroline, Hanover, Henrico, King William and Richmond from both a distribution center and a mobile food pantry.
The distribution center, located in Hanover county, is where our ninth grade class served this past Wednesday. Together, with organizers and volunteers pitching in, the pantry can reach 350-500 people with about nine meals each week.
Eighth Graders at Lucy Corr Retirement Center/Involvement with Moments of Hope
Eighth graders painted terracotta pots and made cards for the residents of Lucy Corr. They also colored placemats for the Thanksgiving dinner that Moments of Hope hosts.
