Rachel Marcum
Rachel Marcum attended Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana, where she earned degrees in Elementary Education and Spanish. This was complemented by a 7-month study abroad experience in Buenos Aires, Argentina, enriching her understanding of language and culture.
After college, Mrs. Marcum worked as an ESL and Special Education assistant, then moved on to teach 2nd grade at a Christian school in Hagerstown, Maryland, for two years, followed by seven years in public schools in Jefferson County, West Virginia. A break from teaching allowed her to complete her master’s in education with a TESOL focus from Concordia University and to get married.
The opportunity to join Banner came unexpectedly when a friend, feeling led by prayer, delivered an application to her doorstep. This felt like a clear sign to Mrs. Marcum to return to teaching, particularly in a Christian setting where she could openly share her faith and integrate biblical principles into her lessons.
Mrs. Marcum's approach to teaching is practical and student-focused, aiming to make her lessons relevant to her students' lives and to Banner's faith-based mission. She believes in creating a supportive and engaging classroom environment where students can thrive both academically and spiritually.
In her free time, Mrs. Marcum enjoys spending time with her dogs, Iris and Ruby, leading the Vacation Bible School at her church, reading, and singing. She and her husband also like visiting arcades and going for walks. Her commitment to her faith, her students, and her community is evident in both her professional and personal life, making her a valued member of the Banner Christian School team.
